SFU Funding Opportunities

Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies

The Dean of Graduate Studies Office provides merit-based awards to graduate students of high academic achievement. It also offers several travel awards for travel and expenses relating to the research component of the student's graduate degree. Graduate Travel and Research Award

The Graduate Travel and Research Award is intended to provide financial support to travel and expenses relating to the research component of the student’s graduate degree.

Indigenous Graduate Travel Award

The Indigenous Graduate Travel Award provides financial support for Indigenous graduate students for the travel component important to their research. Indigenous or “Aboriginal” is defined by Canada’s 1982 Constitution as people identified as First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples of Canada.

Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement

The Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement is only available to Canadian citizens or permanent residents who hold a Tri-agency CGS Scholarship. The award is valued up to $6,000 based on the information and budget justification provided in the application. The related research study period must be between two to six months.

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

FASS Graduate Student Support

The FASS Graduate Student Support Fund provides Research travel funding between $1,000 and $2,000 for travel to a conference or competition where the student is performing or presenting research; to a library, archive, research centre, or other research-related resource; or to another activity which requires travel and which is directly related to the student’s research project or course of study. Support from this fund is not available for participation in co-op, internship placements, or field schools.

Rapid Response Fund

The Rapid Response Fund supports continuing faculty members in FASS to address current topics of general interest both promptly and publicly. It offers a $5000 grant to support public events addressing current topics.

GSS Professional Development Grant

The Professional Development Grant provides a grant of $499 to graduate students presenting at conferences or engaging in field research.
