Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange – Research Grants
Amount:
- The budget for research grants does not include salary for the researcher except for summer salary calculated at 1/9 of the scholar's annual salary.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Taiwan Fellowship
Amount:
- Monthly grants:
- NT$60,000 (2,570 CAD 29TH Oct 2023 rate ) for Professors, associate professors, research fellows, or associate research fellows.
- NT$50,000 (2,134.49 CAD, Oct 2023 rate) for Assistant professors, assistant research fellows, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, doctoral program students, and other candidates recommended by ROC (Taiwan) missions.

Eligibility:
- Applicants shall be foreign nationals who are professors, associate professors, assistant professors, post-doctoral researchers, or doctoral candidates, or same-level research fellows from academic institutions abroad who specialize in social sciences or humanities related to Taiwan, cross-strait relations, mainland China, the Asia Pacific, or other aspects of Chinese studies.
- Applicants recommended by ROC (Taiwan) overseas missions with a field of study on Taiwan’s foreign relations or cross-strait relations.

Details:
- This fellowship awards foreign experts and scholars interested in research related to Taiwan, cross-strait relations, mainland China, the Asia-Pacific region and Chinese studies to conduct advanced research at universities or academic institutions in Taiwan.
- A scholar’s field of study should be in the social sciences, humanities, with a topic related to Taiwan, cross-strait relations, mainland China, the Asia Pacific, and Sinology.
- The research proposal and research area provided in the application cannot be changed without MOFA’s approval. If any change is needed, prior consent from MOFA should be sought.
- The recipients should submit their research findings in writing (at least 20 pages) to CCS within three months after the end of the program. During their stay in Taiwan, the recipients should attend academic seminars and relevant activities held by MOFA and commissioned organizers.
- During the Fellowship period, the recipients are not allowed to receive any scholarships granted by other governmental agencies or public or private academic institutions and schools based in Taiwan. In addition, recipients cannot engage in part-time work without consent from MOFA.
- While in Taiwan, the recipients must abide by ROC law. If a recipient is convicted of violating the Criminal Code or engages in any severe misconduct during the duration of the Fellowship, the recipient’s Fellowship will be revoked.

Needham Research Institute – the Jing Brand Scholarships in Chinese Science and Civilisation
Amount:
- The scholarship funding takes the form of a grant of £1,500 per month to cover essential expenses such as subsistence, plus an allowance towards return international travel.

Eligibility:
- Applications are invited from scholars of any nationality who hold a PhD degree in a relevant field, and who may visit for periods of either 6 or 12 months from May onwards of each year for which the scholarship is offered.
- Applicants will be expected to outline ways in which their research could contribute new insights into the interactions between science, technology, medicine and commerce in Chinese history, and how these relationships are of significance for understanding China’s current and future developments.
- Preference will be given to candidates under the age of 45 who have a good level of spoken English, and who will use part of their time in Cambridge on work intended for publication in a refereed academic journal.

Details:
- The Jing Brand Scholarships in Chinese Science and Civilisation are designed to support research on the history of science and culture in China, in particular the relationship between science, technology, medicine and commerce, and the significance of such research for understanding China’s current and future developments.
- The Jing Brand scholars are expected to play an active part in the academic activities of the Needham Research Institute and the University of Cambridge. On completion of their Scholarship, they will provide a detailed report on the results of their research. Any publication resulting from their visit to the Institute should clearly acknowledge the support of ‘The Jing Brand Scholarship in Chinese Science and Civilisation’
- An additional scholarship to support 1-2 scholars has also been provided by the Qinghai Huzhu Qingkejiu Co., Ltd to support research on the history of industrial technology in China, with a focus on the Tibetan Plateau region of Western China preferred.

- An international scholar who is a Ph.D. student or a postdoctoral research fellow, with the exception of anyone currently holding an R.O.C. passport, is eligible to apply for a Short Term Research Award (abbreviated below to ‘STRA award’).
- Research topics should be related to Taiwan's humanities, social sciences, culture, arts and relevant comparative research.
- Must be neither a Taiwanese national, nor an overseas Taiwanese compatriot.
- Must not already be residing, studying (including internships), teaching or doing research in Taiwan.
- At least two letters of recommendation: one from a senior official of the institution, university, or college where the applicant is currently working or studying (for example: the president or vice-chancellor of a university, the director of an institute, dean of a college, head of a department, or head of a research institute, or a senior official from another institution or organization); another from a teaching scholar or expert in the applicant’s field. If the applicant is a Ph.D. student, a certification of their current enrolment must also be submitted.

- This award encourages individuals from foreign countries (excluding mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau) to undertake short-term research in Taiwan, in the hopes of enhancing their understanding of Taiwanese culture and society.
