Over $2.6 million in new funding from CIHR for health research at SFU Faculty of Science

Biomedical research at Simon Fraser University’s Faculty of Science is getting a boost thanks to new Project Grant funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

The Project Grant program is designed to capture ideas with the greatest potential to advance health-related fundamental or applied knowledge, health research, health care, health systems, and/or health outcomes. It supports research projects proposed and conducted by individual researchers or groups of researchers in all areas of health.  

  • $849,150 for exploring and exploiting Type IV pili for DNA and antibiotic uptake  
    Principal Investigator: Dr. Lisa Craig, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry  
  • $100,000 (to BC Cancer Agency) for studying caspase regulation of cellular stress responses in breast cancer.           
  • Principal Investigator: Dr. Sharon Gorski, Genome Sciences Center, Professor of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry  
  • $807,076 for researching the implications of cancer cell mechanics in evasion of cellular phagocytosis
    Principal Investigator: Dr. Valentin Jaumouillé, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry
  • $849,150 for functional genomic studies of Cdk8/CDK19 in development and disease
    Principal Investigator: Dr. Esther Verheyen, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry
