Faculty in the department of Mathematics has recently been honored with three prestigious awards.

Assistant Professor Ben Adcock was awarded a 2015 Sloan Research Fellowship in recognition of his distinguished performance and accomplishments in the field of mathematics. The Sloan Research Fellowships seek to stimulate fundamental research by early-career scientists and scholars of outstanding promise.

Senior Lecturer Jamie Mulholland was awarded the 2015 Canadian Mathematical Society Excellence in Teaching Award. Mulholland is deeply passionate about sharing the beauty of mathematics to students of all ages and is an engaging and dynamic educator. Mathematics department chair Manfred Trummer says, “Jamie has experimented very successfully with the “flipped classroom” concept, and has a unique talent for engaging students and helping them understand difficult abstract concepts.”

Senior Lecturer and Associate Chair, Veselin Jungic is the recipient of the 2015 3M National Teaching Fellowship. Jungic has been instrumental in encouraging aboriginal youth, in particular, to view and learn mathematics using First Nations imagery and story telling. He has coordinated the creation of animated short films and picture books with mathematical themes in Blackfoot, Cree, Nisga’a and several other First Nations languages.

Trummer says, “These prizes are a recognition of the personal and professional accomplishments and creativity of Ben Adcock, Veselin Jungic and Jamie Mulholland. Ben, early in his career has already acquired an impressive list of scientific accomplishments. Veselin is not only recognized for his innovations in teaching and his outreach activities, but also for his commitment to the cause of providing academic opportunities for Aboriginal youth and Jamie has been one of our most effective and popular teachers since joining the department. It is a great honour for me to work with colleagues of this professional stature."
