PHD CANDIDATE IN MARINE BIOLOGY WINS MAJOR ENVIRONMENTAL PRIZE

PhD candidate Nicola Smith is the recipient of the prestigious Bullitt Environmental Prize.

The prize, worth $100,000, recognizes people from varied backgrounds who have demonstrated the ability to become powerful environmental leaders.

PhD candidate Nicola Smith is the recipient of the prestigious Bullitt Environmental Prize.

The prize, worth $100,000, recognizes people from varied backgrounds who have demonstrated the ability to become powerful environmental leaders.

Smith is from the Bahamas where she has first-hand knowledge of the importance of fishing as a way of life. Her research focuses on invasive specis, coral reef fish ecology and tropical fisheries. 

Using field experiments, surveys, meta-analyses and modeling, Smith hopes to understand and prevent invasive species from threatening the planet's biodiversity.

Smith is studying under the supervision of professor Isabelle Côté in SFU's Earth to Oceans lab.
