Targeting the Google generation
SFU library, 2003 winner of the innovation achievement award from the Canadian Association of Colleges and University Libraries, launched Canada’s first mobile reference service to advance “information literacy” among students. Twice weekly, librarians venture out on campus with wireless laptops to teach students how to find and evaluate research materials using the Internet. The library’s myriad resources include an on-line, real-time reference service, accessible from anywhere in the world.
SFU’s reference librarians also work closely with faculty to integrate library skills directly into courses. The skills are presented during class time and tailored to students’ assignments or other topics identified by the instructor.
