Students manage $6.5 million endowment
A team of graduate business students tested their investment management skills by tending a $6.5-million university endowment fund – the largest in Canada to be managed by students. The students are enrolled in SFU’s Global Asset and Wealth Management MBA program, the only finance-oriented MBA in Canada to place significant emphasis on both technical training in finance as well as in-depth exposure to practical issues of estate planning and the management of client relationships.
The endowment was provided by The Lohn Foundation, a long-time supporter of SFU Business.
"It’s an opportunity for our students to practice investment management skills," says associate professor Peter Klein, a chartered financial analyst and academic director of the program. “Further, the money is being managed for a purpose, since there is a ‘client’ – the university – which uses the returns from the fund to support institutional goals, including student bursaries.”
