Technology’s impact on health care

Communication professor Ellen Balka, winner of the 2003 YWCA Woman of Distinction award for workplace innovation, received $3 million from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council to investigate the impact of technology on the nation’s health sector. The four-year study, involving researchers from around the globe, will clarify problems that occur for health care professionals and the public as new technologies are introduced into health settings, and also identify potential solutions.

“One of the goals of our research is to better understand the problems that occur as new technologies are introduced into health settings,” Balka says. “Our goal is to learn more about the contexts in which technologies are used, so that new technologies can be designed to better meet users’ needs.”
