March 18, 2025

Dr. Aidan Vining, professor emeritus at Simon Fraser University’s Beedie School of Business, has been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal for his contributions to public policy. An award ceremony on March 2, 2025, in Vancouver recognized medal recipients, including Dr. Vining, for their contributions to public policy

The King Charles III Coronation Medal was introduced in 2023 to commemorate His Majesty’s coronation and is awarded to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to Canada. The medal also honors those who have achieved notable accomplishments abroad that bring recognition to Canada. A total of 30,000 medals are being awarded to deserving recipients.

A respected scholar in public policy and applied economics, Dr. Vining has an academic career spanning more than four decades. He has held faculty positions at both Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia and previously served as the academic director of SFU’s Executive MBA program. His research and publications are widely referenced by universities and government institutions globally.

His academic contributions include co-authoring Policy Analysis: Concepts and Practice, with its seventh edition set for release later this year, and Cost-Benefit Analysis: Concepts and Practice, which will be published by Cambridge University Press in 2026. He is also the author of Investing in the Disadvantaged.

Additionally, his most recent book Dog Economics: Perspectives on Our Canine Relationships takes a unique approach to economic theory by using examples from the world of dogs, pets, and business. The book has been well received and is being adopted as a supplemental text in business, economics, and public policy courses.

SFU Beedie congratulates Dr. Vining on this well-earned recognition and his substantial contributions to public policy and academic scholarship.
