Measuring the impact of policy decisions
A $1 million research grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) will enable SFU and community researchers to examine the impact of B.C. public policies on British Columbians, with a focus on vulnerable populations. SFU and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives will jointly oversee the five-year project, which will involve an alliance of research collaborators from four B.C. universities and 23 community organizations.
SFU political science and women’s studies professor Marjorie Griffin-Cohen is a co-investigator on the project, which will examine how changes to social assistance, employment standards and community health policies affect economic security.
We want to understand the effects of these changes, Griffin-Cohen says. “Public policies aren’t all good or all bad, but it’s important to be sure the benefits outweigh the costs, particularly when they affect the most vulnerable people.”
