Research adds to fish farm debate
SFU’s Centre for Coastal Studies (CCS) has waded into the salmon farming debate with an analysis of the level of sea lice infestation among wild salmon in the salmon farm-laden region off B.C.’s south central coast. Recent sharp declines in wild pink salmon in the region prompted the investigation by SFU statistics professor Rick Routledge, a CCS member, and biologist Alexandra Morton.
Routledge and Morton found that juvenile pink salmon average less than one louse per fish before passing the archipelago’s 27 salmon farms. Once past the farms, however, the average infestation rate climbed to more than six per fish.
CCS brings often-conflicting groups together to resolve issues related to fishing, aquaculture and ecological management. CCS researchers, who span several fields in the social and natural sciences, seek multi-disciplinary solutions to such ecological stresses as exotic invasions, climate change and depleted fish stocks.
