Coffee shops focus on providing coffee and tea as well as light snacks. Food choices range from pastries and muffins to soups and sandwiches. Many of these coffee shops closely resemble restaurants, offering a range of hot meals. From a cultural standpoint, they largely serve as centers of social interaction providing social members with a place to congregate, talk, write, read, entertain one another, or just simply to pass time individually or in small groups.

Coffee shops have been a steady and growing industry among young student, retirees and people who work in the corporate world alike. Whether you are 5 years old hanging out with your parents eating a muffin or fifty years old hanging out with old mates over hot chocolate, its growing popularity has undeniably been increasing. At the same time, there has been a growing amount of people staying up at later hours during the night. Even though there may not be many people who drink coffee at the wee hours of the night, there are many sutdents who stay up late to do their homework in cofee shops because it is a place where they can relax, get some food and have a drink without having to worry about cooking and making drinks for themselves at home. Likewise, there have been many people, like myself who have insomnia who are looking for a place to go at night or in the early morning. Because there are not very many comfy places for me to hang out during these hours, I would often just sit around at home and wish that I could only have a place to go.

The reason why I chose to do my project on finding the most suitable location for a coffee shop in Burnaby is because it is the city where I live in and I am always on the look out for a new cozy place to study in a student-friendly environment. I as a studnet often like to study outside my home so I can get awaya from the comforts of my personal comfort zone. Although it's not to say that a coffee shop is not comfortable, it would not be a place where I would want to fall asleep in, like my bed.
