Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) Associate Dean, Research and Professor Robert Hogg was recognized for his exceptional service to Canada in late January with a King Charles III Coronation Medal.

The medal – which commemorates the 2023 coronation of Canada’s Head of State – is awarded to outstanding Canadians who have made a difference in their communities.

Hogg, who is a senior scientist at the BC Centre of Excellence in HIV/AIDS, is being lauded for the decades of work he has committed to improving our collective understanding of health inequities amongst people living with HIV, specifically focusing on socio-demographic factors that impact HIV prognosis.

With more than 650 academic papers to his credit, Hogg has dedicated his career to working with B.C. clinicians, community organizations and people living with HIV to find ways to overcome barriers to treatment and to initiate approaches to prevention. He has also been a strong advocate for increasing access to antiretroviral therapy, particularly among disenfranchised populations.

“This award is not just a reflection of my efforts,” says Hogg. “It is a recognition of the collective work we have done to improve the lives of people living with HIV in British Columbia and beyond, while also challenging the health disparities that persist.”

In addition to being an internationally renowned researcher and scientific leader, Hogg has actively developed and nurtured the next generation of scientists, investigators, policy makers, and public health leaders through his work as an educator and mentor. His guidance, advice and leadership as the Associate Dean, Research at FHS have greatly contributed to the Faculty’s reputation for excellence as well as its overall research success.

Reflecting on his career to date, Hogg is both humble and grateful: “I have been incredibly fortunate to collaborate with passionate colleagues, clinicians, community organizations, and individuals living with HIV. I genuinely hope that our collective efforts will continue yield lasting benefits in the struggle to end the global HIV pandemic.”

The King Charles III Coronation Medal is just the latest of Hogg’s many accolades. Previously, his work and contributions have been recognized by:
