Mentoring with Math - Math Mentor

In-Person

Use your passion for math to help kids build confidence and fulfill their potential!

The SFU Surrey–TD Community Engagement Centre and Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver (BBGV) are collaborating with Surrey Libraries to offer the Mentoring with Math Program for children in Grades 3–7. The program aims to help elementary school students develop their math skills in a fun way using the JUMP Math program, and also to engage them in games, and activities. JUMP Math is a numeracy program that is dedicated to enhancing the potential in children by encouraging an understanding and a love of math in students and educators. JUMP Math replaces the self-fulfilling myth that some people are born with mathematical ability with the core principle that all children can be led to think mathematically.

Please note that this program will be running in-person at Strawberry Hill Library. Volunteers will be required to follow the Surrey Libraries and BBGV COVID-19 Health and Safety Plan and Checklist Guidelines (which will be reviewed during the Volunteer Orientation).

Your role:

We are looking for committed and enthusiastic volunteers to support Mentoring with Math. The program will be coordinated by staff from BBGV and volunteers are needed to help facilitate the math activities and games, and to build relationships with the students.

In this role, you will:

  • Acquire knowledge in the Jump Math curriculum.
  • Apply learned knowledge in the Jump Math curriculum by providing effective tutoring support to elementary school students in math.
  • Productively engage in conversation with the learner to determine academic support needs.
  • Adapt tutoring strategies to respond appropriately to different learner needs.
  • Facilitate inclusive group mentoring activities and games.
  • Demonstrate effective mentoring techniques such as active listening, coaching, advising, and providing feedback.

Other benefits:

  • Build experience working with children and mentoring in an after-school setting.
  • Develop interpersonal, communication and teaching skills.
  • Use your skills to help others.
  • Obtain credit on your co-curricular record.

Program Logistics:

Volunteers are expected to commit to the program on a weekly basis, every Tuesday.

  • Time: 3:30 pm - 5:45 pm (this includes time for preparation and debrief)
  • Location: Strawberry Hill Library (7399 122 St, Surrey, BC V3W 5J2).
  • Dates
    • The Spring iteration of Mentoring with Math will take place from January 17 - March 7, 2023
    • The Summer iteration will run from May 9 - August 29, 2023

Please note, Mentoring with Math requires an extensive application process and will also request a number of references. Due to the thorough application process, we highly encourage volunteers to plan to participate in the program for the entire year (until August 2023). We also realize that your schedule may have to change next semester, so the minimum commitment you must be able to make is one full semester (Spring/Summer).

Mandatory Volunteer Orientation:

  • Date: Tuesday, January 10, 2023
  • Time: From 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm
  • Location: Zoom
