Guiding Values and Principles
As individual members of the FHS I-EDI Advisory Circle, we aspire to reflect in our actions the 7 Grandfather Teachings of Humility, Wisdom, Love, Respect, Bravery, Honesty, and Truth.
As a group, we have developed the following values and principles to serve as a standing agreement - with members of the circle, and with the broader FHS community - to guide our work, our engagement with each other, and to help us serve our purpose. This is a living list that will guide our work and will necessarily change as we receive feedback from the FHS community.
Open Dialogue
The Advisory Circle sees dialogue as our most powerful strategy. For building trust, transparency, safety and moving towards Indigenization, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. We commit to supporting full and meaningful dialogue on all issues and engaging in a process that recognizes and respects our differences.
Trust
Members of the Advisory Circle will engage with each other and other members of the FHS community with trust in each other’s integrity and highest intentions for positive change. We also acknowledge the continuous work of earning the trust of all stakeholders and in doing so, commit to ensuring that any private information about a student, faculty or staff member is kept in strict confidence and is treated with respect and sensitivity.
Accountability
We hold ourselves accountable to what we pledge to do (e.g., what is in the Annual Action Plan). We will undertake meaningful actions as allies and advocates, to advance our priorities and commitments and although we understand The Advisory Circle does not have the power to determine the resolution of any individual incident, we hold ourselves accountable to systemic and structural change.
Transparency
Members of the Advisory Circle recognize the importance of making our work visible to the community. We bring honesty, reliability and context when reporting on our actions to the community. We prioritize reporting through Faculty Council meetings, publishing our Annual Action Plan on our website (with updates once per term), and making our meeting minutes available internally on InfoCentral and externally upon request.
Humility & Safety
We approach the work of Indigenization and inclusivity with humility and knowledge that we have much to learn. The Advisory Circle will strive to strengthen FHS’ culture of safety and enable community members to call attention to spaces where they feel unsafe, to acknowledge harm, and to encourage ongoing education.
