EASC Undergrad Financial Assistance & Awards
SFU provides a number of mechanisms to financially assist with your studies, including scholarships, bursaries and loans. In addition, the Department of Earth Sciences offers several awards and scholarships (see details below).

Earth Sciences Undergraduate Scholarship
Greater Vancouver Mining Women’s Association Award in Earth Sciences
The GVMWA Award in Earth Sciences is provided annually to a female Earth Sciences major on the basis of academic standing and extracurricular involvement, on nomination of the Chair of Earth Sciences.
One award valued at $1,000 available to a female undergraduate student pursuing an undergraduate degree with an approved major in Earth Sciences on the basis of good academic standing and extracurricular involvement. The award will be made by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee on the nomination of the Chair, Department of Earth Sciences.

Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Sommer Scholarship in Earth Sciences
The Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Sommer Scholarship in Earth Sciences is awarded annually on the basis of academic merit to a student majoring in Earth Sciences who has completed at least 90 undergraduate credits including 12 upper division credits in Earth Sciences.
One award valued at $2,500 is available. The Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Sommer Scholarship is adjudicated in the Financial Aid and Awards office. Students should apply on-line for the scholarship directly to Financial Aid. The scholarship will be awarded by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee.

Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (formerly APEGBC) Scholarship in Earth Sciences
The Engineers and Geoscientists BC Scholarship is annually awarded to a 4th year Earth Sciences major based on academic merit, on nomination of the Chair of Earth Sciences and approved by Senate.
One Engineers and Geoscientists BC Scholarship in Earth Sciences valued at $1,500 will be made available annually in any semester, based on academic merit, to a 4th year student with an approved Earth Sciences major and proved participation in the Geology or Environmental Geoscience stream of Earth Sciences, leading to an eventual Professional Geoscientist designation. The award will be made by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee on Scholarships Awards and Bursaries, upon nomination by the Chair, Earth Sciences. Students need not apply for this scholarship. Winners will be informed of their selection by the department.

Division of Engineers and Geoscientists in the Resource Sector (DEGIRS)
This is an annual bursary intended to provide financial assistance to students focused on studies related directly to professional engineering and/or geoscience/geotechnique in the resource sector, adjudicated by DEGIRS.
The Division of Engineers and Geoscientists in the Resource Sector (DEGIRS) provides an annual bursary intended to provide financial assistance to students in an accredited post-secondary or post-graduate program at a degree-granting institution in BC. Studies should relate directly to professional engineering and/or geoscience/geotechnique in the resource sector. DEGIRS supports Member excellence in the provision of professional engineering and professional geoscience services in support of sustainable, land-based resource development activities, as distinct from manufacturing and processing activities, while advancing work place safety and protection of the public interest, and the environment. Division members possess engineering and / or geoscience expertise including, but not limited to, the mapping and assessment of terrain and related geological hazards; hazard and risk analysis; hydrological analysis; and planning and design for access development and management.

The Eldorado Gold Award in Earth Sciences
The Eldorado Gold Award in Earth Sciences was established in 2021 with a generous three-year commitment of $5,000. At least two awards, valued at a minimum of $2,500 each will be granted in any term to full-time undergraduate students majoring in Earth Sciences who are in the Geology stream and are interested in pursuing a career in geological exploration.
The awards will be granted by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee upon the nomination of the Chair, Department of Earth Sciences.
The Eldorado Gold Bursary in Earth Sciences
The Eldorado Gold Bursary in Earth Sciences was established in 2021 with a generous three-year commitment of $5,000. Multiple bursaries, valued at a minimum of $1,000 each and a maximum of $2,000 each, will be granted in any term to full-time undergraduate students majoring in Earth Sciences who are in the Geology stream in the Faculty of Science.
The bursary will be administered by the office of Financial Aid and Awards and granted by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee.
Wiley Book Prize
The Wiley Book Prize is offered to an SFU student who is a declared EASC Major with the highest GPA entering 2nd year on nomination of the Chair of Earth Sciences.
Wiley Canada provides yearly a $250 book prize to a deserving undergraduate student in the Department of Earth Sciences in recognition of Dr. Dan Gibson’s co-authorship of the textbook titled "Introduction to Physical Geology: The Science of Earth". The prize is offered to an SFU student who is a declared EASC Major with the highest GPA entering 2nd year. Students need not apply for this prize; winners will be informed of their selection by the department.
Winners of the prize will then contact via email the Marketing Manager in charge of book scholarship at Wiley Canada. The Marketing Manager will arrange access to the Wiley website to allow the winner to select their preferred books.
