Collaboration in complex systems demands a delicate balance between protecting individual or organizational interests (often referred to as "turf") and building trust to facilitate collective action. This framework illustrates the trade-off, showing that as we move from competition towards integration, there is a gradual shift from guarding one's turf to fostering trust.

Initially, entities may focus on their own agenda and resources, but as they progress through communication, cooperation, and coordination, the emphasis shifts towards shared goals and mutual benefits.
