Blended By Design 1: Finding the right mix for blended courses
Summary
Part 1 of the Blended Learning Workshop series provides an opportunity for instructors to map out their course in a blended format.
Description
Is there a recipe for that?! Blended by Design offers you an opportunity to map out a course in a blended format, whether it be a new or existing course. With guidance from a facilitator and the help of colleagues, you will be able to make informed decisions around teaching blended courses by exploring combinations of in-person and online learning that aim to have a well-integrated approach grounded in pedagogy and disciplinary context.
At the end of this 2-hour session for faculty and instructors, you will have a draft concept map and sense of direction to identify elements best suited for in-class instruction and for online learning.
This workshop is the first of a three-part series, but can be attended as a one-off session.
Learning Outcomes
After completing this workshop, you should be able to:
- Understand SFU's model of blended learning articulated in the adopted definition and scheduling patterns available.
- Compare/contrast instructor and student fears, motivation, and interest related to blended teaching and learning
- Articulate course components in a concept map to assist in adapting a pedagogical approach/model for a blended format of a target course.
Typically offered in January or early February.
blended by Design 2: Combining Online & In-Person Class Activities
Summary
Part 2 of the Blended Learning Workshop series explores ways to enhance student learning experiences with class activities that span online and in-person engagement.
Description
Quality ingredients lead to quality results. Blended by Design 2 focuses on enhancing student learning experiences with class activities that span online and in-person engagement. Using an instructional model, you will determine a consistent sequence of class activities to follow in your blended course and plan for the integration of online and in-person learning.
A firsthand demonstration of learning technology tools will help you make informed decisions about what ingredients to combine in your blended course.
Learning Outcomes
After completing this workshop, you should be able to:
- Identify a range of activity options that promote a variety of interaction types.
- Design an activity sequence for your blended course using an instructional model.
- Plan out the development of well-integrated online learning activities that promote asynchronous interaction.
Typically offered in February or early March.
Blended by design 3: Facilitating learning in blended courses
Summary
Part 3 of the Blended Learning Workshop series explores the shift in role and instructors often experience when delivering a blended course.
Description
What is the secret sauce of blended courses? Individual approaches vary, but becoming a good facilitator requires patience and practice. Blended by Design 3 focuses on the shift in role that instructors often experience when delivering a blended course.
More than a workshop, it provides you a space to connect with others who are navigating the change that comes with teaching in multiple modes. With guidance and advice on how to enhance facilitating skills, you will have the opportunity to plan for a blended experience – to make teaching more rewarding and courses more engaging.
