Blended Learning Workshop 1: Getting Started
Summary
Part 1 of the Blended Learning Workshop series provides an opportunity for instructors to map out their course in a blended format.
Description
Are you ready to get the blender out?! Getting Started with blended learning offers you an opportunity to map out a course in a blended format. With guidance from a facilitator and the help of colleagues, you will be able to make informed decisions about blended learning such as identifying the most suitable scheduling option and adopting a pedagogical approach that can enhance the student learning experience.
At the end of this 2-hour session, instructors will have a concept map and sense of direction to identify elements best suited for in-class instruction and for online learning. This workshop is the first of a three part series, but can be attended as a one-off session.
Learning Outcomes
After completing this workshop, you should be able to:
- Apply the SFU definition of blended learning, and scheduling options to your teaching context
- Compare/contrast instructor and student fears, motivation, and interest related to blended teaching and learning
- Adapt a pedagogical approach/model suitable for a blended learning format of a target course
Typically offered in January.
Blended Learning Workshop 2: Designing and Integrating Online Components
Summary
Part 2 of the Blended Learning Workshop series explores ways to promote interaction and enhance the blended learning environment.
Description
All blends are not created equal. Designing and Integrating Online Components builds on the foundation from Getting Started by looking at ways to enhance the learning environment of a blended course in any discipline. Through collaboration with colleagues, you will explore methods of promoting interaction with a variety of learning activities. Using an instructional model, you will determine a consistent sequence of activities to follow in your blended course and plan for the development of the online component. A demonstration of learning technology tools will help you make informed decisions about what to implement in your blended course.
Learning Outcomes
After completing this workshop, you should be able to:
- Identify a range of activity options that promote interaction and participation in your course
- Design an effective activity sequence for your blended course
- Plan out the development of well-integrated online learning activities that promote asynchronous interaction
Typically offered in February.
Blended Learning Workshop 3: Facilitating Blended Learning
Summary
Part 3 of the Blended Learning Workshop series explores the changing role of the instructor in delivering a blended course.
Description
Got rhythm? Facilitating Blended Learning is all about how to dance between modes. This session explores the shift in role that instructors often experience when delivering a blended course. More than a workshop, it provides you a space to connect with others who are navigating the change that comes with teaching in multiple modes. With guidance and advice on how to enhance facilitating skills, you will have the opportunity to plan for a blended delivery to make teaching more rewarding and courses more engaging.
Learning Outcomes
After completing this workshop, you should be able to:
- Identify points of overlap and departure between the roles of teaching face-to-face and facilitating online learning
- Describe a variety of approaches to facilitating online learning
- Plan for the integration of teaching face-to-face sessions and facilitating online learning
Typically offered in April.
Audience
Faculty, instructors and graduate students with all levels of teaching experience and all disciplinary backgrounds are welcome.
These sessions are aimed at instructors who are embarking on (re)design of a course into a blended format.
