Processing Archivist (Limited Term)

The Archives and Records Management Department (ARMD) at Simon Fraser University (SFU) invites applications for the position of Limited Term Processing Archivist with an anticipated start date of January 2, 2025 and duration of up to six months. Depending on the successful candidate’s schedule and interest, this could be configured as either a part-time or full-time position. Reporting to the University Archivist and Coordinator of Information and Privacy and, based on the Burnaby Mountain Campus, this position will be primarily responsible for processing privately donated records.

The ideal candidate will hold a Master’s degree in Archival Studies (MAS) or Library/Information Studies (MLIS, MLS, MIS, etc.) with a focus in Archives from an ALA accredited institution; have knowledge of the Rules for Archival Description (RAD) and archival theory; and, have some experience arranging, describing, and processing archival records.

ARDM is responsible for the administration of three records-centric programs – archives, records management, and freedom of information and protection of privacy. The successful candidate will work as a collaborative member of a team of information management professionals and will be expected to participate in the overall operations of the Department, including the delivery of archival reference services.

Description of duties

This limited-term position will focus on arranging and describing privately donated records of a former university president and provincial politician. Records to be processed include teaching and research records, constituency records, and numerous audio-visual records (e.g., VHS, U- Matic, betacam, and audio cassette tapes). Where time allows, the processing archivist may alsoassist in the provision of reference services, and perform other duties as required.

Key aspects of this position include:

  • Arranging and describing archival records;
  • Creating a RAD-compliant description using ARMD’s in-house Archival Information System (AIS) and the SFU’s Access to Memory (AtoM) database;
  • Rehousing archival records; and
  • Identifying access and/or copyright restrictions.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Archival Studies (MAS) or Library/Information Studies (MLIS, MLS, MIS, etc.) with a focus in Archives from an ALA accredited institution.
  • Knowledge of the Rules for Archival Description and archival theory.
  • Some experience processing archival records.
  • Understanding of copyright, privacy and information access laws as they apply to Archives.
  • Ability to recognize, respect, and work effectively with individuals and groups with diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
  • Excellent organization skills, attention to detail, and written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently.

Full-time Continuing Collections Assessment & Aquisitions Librarian

Simon Fraser University Library invites applications for a full-time continuing Collections Assessment and Acquisitions Librarian. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Libraries, Collections & Content Strategy, and to the Head, Resource Acquisitions, Management, and Metadata (RAMM), this position will (a) lead and coordinate collections assessment projects across the library and (b) lead the Acquisitions unit and its four continuing staff positions. The division of work is estimated to be 80% collections assessment and 20% acquisitions but will vary in response to priorities and emerging projects. The incumbent will plan and coordinate collection assessment activities to inform evidence-based selection and retention decisions in alignment with the strategic plan and develop and support acquisitions workflows including overseeing and training staff. The position will work closely with Liaison Librarians, and consult and collaborate with other Library colleagues such as the Metadata Librarian and the Electronic Resources Librarian as well as colleagues in Access Services, branches, etc.

This position will appeal to an analytical, collaborative and innovative individual with excellent project management and communication skills, a user-centered focus, and an aptitude for technical and analytical work. ASSIGNMENT

  • Collections Assessment
    • Provide leadership and coordination for collections assessment projects across all Library locations;
    • Support effective decision-making concerning renewal, selection, retention, and (re)location of collections, presenting findings, and making recommendations to the ADL, Collections & Content Strategy based on best practices;
    • Analyze large-scale collections data, with consideration for competing priorities and complex needs of various stakeholders;
    • Manage and coordinate the Library’s shared print commitments (COPPUL SPAN, North/Nord, etc.).
  • Acquisitions
    • Provide leadership, expertise, and management for the Acquisitions unit, including hiring, training, and supervising four continuing staff;
    • Design and support acquisitions workflows for all formats;
    • Develop and manage integrations between the library’s integrated library system (Alma) and third-party vendor platforms and systems such as our book vendor (YBP GOBI), serials vendor (EbscoNet), OCLC, etc.
  • General
    • Collaborate, consult, and liaise with stakeholders including Liaison Librarians, Collections Management, RAMM and Access Services across all Library locations, in particular with the Metadata Librarian and the Electronic Resources Librarian;
    • Document and train colleagues in use of software and tools when required;Participate in appropriate professional activities at the local, regional, or national level;
    • Advance the values and priorities outlined in the Library’s Strategic Plan.

QUALIFICATIONS

While the search committee recognizes that no one candidate is likely to meet all the qualifications in equal measure, the following qualifications will be used in the assessment of candidates for the position.

  • Master's degree in Library or Information Studies from an ALA accredited program, or its equivalent;
  • Minimum of 2 years professional library or equivalent relevant experience;
  • Familiarity with research library collections, the role of consortia, and trends in collections assessment and in academic publishing related to print, ebook, and ejournal publishers and platforms;
  • Experience extracting and analyzing collection assessment data;
  • Experience with the acquisition of print and electronic books as well as knowledge of workflows and best practices in the changing landscape of library acquisitions;
  • Advanced knowledge and experience using Excel and collection assessment data tools;
  • Experience with Alma and Alma Analytics;
  • Knowledge of Integrated Library System (ILS) functions including acquisition functions, back-end configuration, import profiles, and batch loading;
  • Knowledge of relevant library technical standards and protocols such as MARC, EOD (Embedded Order Data), and EDI (Electronic Data Interchange);
  • Demonstrated ability to accomplish complex tasks and projects with minimal supervision, to establish priorities and maintain a balance between short and long-term goals;
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills with high degree of attention to detail;
  • Experience leading projects with collaborative teams, workflow development, and writing documentation;
  • Ability to recognize, respect and work effectively with individuals and groups with diverse perspectives and backgrounds;
  • Awareness of, and sensitivity to, issues of equity, inclusion, accessibility and decolonization activities or initiatives.
  • Project Management training or certification;
  • Supervisory experience;

Undergraduate Engagement and Student Success Librarian | Full-time, Continuing | closed

Simon Fraser University Library invites applications for an Undergraduate Engagement and Student Success (UESS) Librarian. Reporting to the Head, Learning & Engagement, the incumbent in this exciting new role will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and growing collaborations and connections between the Library and its undergraduate users, with a particular focus on students from equity-deserving groups. Working across SFU's three campuses, the successful candidate will cultivate a welcoming culture and will create and foster partnerships with on- and off-campus communities to promote and leverage library services and collections. In collaboration with colleagues, the UESS Librarian will lead the development of strategies and programming both in-person and online that support a holistic, person-centred approach to undergraduate student success and flourishing.

  • Build a more equitable and inclusive library and university by applying anti-racism and anti-oppression strategies to all areas of the UESS Librarian portfolio; 

  • Enact reconciliation and decolonization efforts in all areas of the UESS Librarian portfolio;

  • Participate in Library projects, teams, working groups, and committees;

Term Community Engagement and Outreach Librarian | CLOSED

The Public Knowledge Project invites applications for a Term Community Engagement and Outreach Librarian. Reporting to the PKP Director of Operations, the incumbent will be responsible for supporting PKP's mission of increasing the quality, diversity, and reach of scholarly publishing.  This is a full-time (1 FTE) Librarian term position (leave backfill) supported by external funds.

This is a critical role at PKP that is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with PKP’s international community and partners, managing PKP's Membership Program and coordinating PKP’s community outreach and education programs. This role is intended to grow PKP’s capacity by soliciting and enabling contributions, both financial and in-kind, from PKP’s wide-ranging community, including users of its software and services, software developers, partners working on aligned initiatives and projects, organizations with aligned goals, and funders. The successful candidate will be able to serve as a representative of PKP in a wide range of settings, be adept at engaging with PKP’s diverse community, and capable of developing and overseeing strategies for PKP to engage with its community more broadly.

PKP is a global initiative dedicated to improving the scholarly and public quality of research primarily through the provision of open-source software such as Open Journal Systems (OJS), Open Preprint Systems (OPS) and Open Monograph Press (OMP). As of 2023, over 44,000 journals are using OJS as their article submission review and publishing platform. PKP supports several publishing related services such as the PKP Preservation Network and ongoing work in XML authoring. PKP is also involved in a number of research projects and provides online educational courses and related resources on scholarly publishing. ASSIGNMENT

  • Build close working relationships with PKP stakeholders, including community members, national and international organizations, and funding agencies.
  • Develop effective plans, policies, procedures, and activities based on current research and best practices to engage members.
  • Assist in the coordination of governance bodies across PKP, especially the Members Committee.
  • Support the Communications Team and PKP liaisons to the interest groups and facilitate work by the Community Team.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Master's degree in Library or Information Studies from an ALA accredited program, or its equivalent.
  • Three (3) or more years’ experience in outreach or community development and education, preferably in an academic or non-profit environment.
  • Strategic understanding and knowledge of trends in one or more of the following: higher education, academic libraries, open research infrastructure, and scholarly publishing.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing educational and training materials.
  • Experience with any of the following: successful fundraising activities, coordinating in-kind contributions, grant writing, and/or recruiting donors.
  • Ability to recognize, respect, and work effectively with individuals and groups with diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain effective working relationships across multiple and diverse institutions, across levels within organizations from specialist to executive level.

Simon Fraser University Library invites applications for the position of Head, Learning & Engagement. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Libraries for Academic Engagement and based at the W.A.C. ASSIGNMENT

  • Under the direction of the Associate Dean of Libraries, Digital Strategy, and in collaboration with members of the Data Services team, provide research data services to researchers and others through consultations and workshops;
  • Assist in the development of institutional policies and procedures related to research data management;

Collections Assessment & Aquisitions Librarian, Full-time, Continuing 

Simon Fraser University Library invites applications for a full-time continuing Collections Assessment and Acquisitions Librarian. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Libraries, Collections & Content Strategy, and to the Head, Resource Acquisitions, Management, and Metadata (RAMM), this position will (a) lead and coordinate collections assessment projects across the library and (b) lead the Acquisitions unit and its four continuing staff positions. The division of work is estimated to be 80% collections assessment and 20% acquisitions but will vary in response to priorities and emerging projects. ASSIGNMENT

Collections Assignment 

  • Provide leadership and coordination for collections assessment projects across all Library locations;
  • Support effective decision-making concerning renewal, selection, retention, and (re)location of collections, presenting findings, and making recommendations to the ADL, Collections & Content Strategy based on best practices;
  • Analyze large-scale collections data, with consideration for competing priorities and complex needs of various stakeholders;
  • Manage and coordinate the Library’s shared print commitments (COPPUL SPAN, North/Nord, etc.).

Acquisitions

  • Provide leadership, expertise, and management for the Acquisitions unit, including hiring, training, and supervising four continuing staff;
  • Design and support acquisitions workflows for all formats;
  • Develop and manage integrations between the library’s integrated library system (Alma) and thirdparty vendor platforms and systems such as our book vendor (YBP GOBI), serials vendor (EbscoNet), OCLC, etc.

General

  • Collaborate, consult, and liaise with stakeholders including Liaison Librarians, Collections Management, RAMM and Access Services across all Library locations, in particular with the Metadata Librarian and the Electronic Resources Librarian;
  • Document and train colleagues in use of software and tools when required;
