Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track) in Field Archaeology

The Department of Archaeology at Simon Fraser University is seeking to fill one Assistant Professor (tenure track) position in Archaeology, with a preferred start date of January 1, 2025.

The Department has concentrated expertise in three areas—Lab-based archaeological sciences, First Nations Heritage and Resource Management, and Biological Anthropology, including Forensic sciences. We have a strong focus on high-quality lab, field and community-based research and engagement, as well as on experiential training of our students.

We seek an expert in human-environment interactions, with a PhD in Archaeology or related areas, with a strong field-based research program in the Pacific Northwest of North America. However, PhD candidates with solid indication of imminent completion may be hired at the rank of Instructor and will be promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor upon completion of the PhD. Preference will be given to candidates with an archaeological science focus or background, or with expertise in technological approaches/applications to archaeology.

The successful candidate is expected to bring complementary expertise to the existing ones in the Department to enhance our strength in research and training in Archaeology, as well as teaching in our Cultural Resource Management Certificate. We seek an expert with demonstrated or potential capacity to attract funding, supervise and mentor graduate students, and develop new undergraduate courses. The candidate is also expected to develop and teach the local British Columbia field school in our curriculum. Our normal teaching load is 4 courses/year.

Faculty salaries at SFU are based on the salary scales bargained between the University and the SFU Faculty Association. A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this position is $104,700 to $133,322. Candidates for the Assistant Professor position must have a PhD; however, PhD candidates with a solid indication of imminent completion may be hired at the rank of Instructor and will be promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor upon completion of the PhD. A reasonable estimate for the salary range if the successful candidate will be starting as an Instructor is $98,340.

Assistant Professor in Bioarchaeology/Biological Anthropology (tenure-track)

We seek a human skeletal biologist, with a PhD in Anthropology, Archaeology or related areas, with expertise and a strong or promising research program in ancient health and disease, paleopathology or similar areas, including those which focus on biocultural, biomedical, or community-based approaches to the study of health and disease in the past.

The successful candidate is expected to bring complementary expertise to the existing ones in the Department to enhance our strength in research and training in Bioarchaeology/Biological Anthropology, as well as teaching in our Bioanthropology Certificate. We seek an expert with demonstrated or potential capacity to attract funding and supervise and mentor graduate students, develop new undergraduate courses, and teach most of the biological anthropology courses in our curriculum. Our normal teaching load is 4 courses/year.

Faculty salaries at SFU are based on the salary scales bargained between the University and the SFU Faculty Association. A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this position is $89,652 to $114,866.

Lecturer in Environmental Science

The Opportunity

We seek a dedicated and innovative educator who will be responsible for teaching courses in environmental science, training and mentoring environmental science students, and contributing to pedagogical leadership of our School. The successful candidate will possess a PhD in any field related to environmental science and will demonstrate a deep and broad knowledge of environmental science topics necessary to effectively teach lower- and upper-division undergraduate courses. They will have a proven track record of teaching, as well as developing science curriculum for majors and non-majors. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise using evidence-based pedagogy that fosters an inclusive learning environment. Experience with or strong potential for instructional and curriculum innovation at the undergraduate level will be considered an asset. The successful candidate will have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills including, but not limited to, valuing and respecting diverse perspectives and a collaborative disposition.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and teach undergraduate courses in Environmental Science (including core, large enrollment lower division courses, writing intensive courses, and smaller upper division seminars and capstone courses; https://www.sfu.ca/students/calendar/2025/spring/courses/evsc.html) and mentor undergraduates in environmental science. The typical workload of a Lecturer at SFU is 8 courses per year, taught across 3 semesters.

Supervise and work collaboratively with teaching assistants.

Contribute to curriculum and program development, serve on School and Faculty committees, and engage in outreach activities that promote the program.

Assistant Professor, Liber Ero Chair in Climate Action and Sustainability

About the Program and Job Description

The School of Resource and Environmental Management (REM) at Simon Fraser University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor for the Liber Ero Chair in Climate Action and Sustainability. The School of Resource and Environmental Management (REM) is an applied graduate and undergraduate school in which both social and natural scientists apply inter- and transdisciplinary approaches to research in resource and environmental management. Our mission is to inspire leadership and improve decision-making in environmental management through internationally recognized research, education, professional practice, and community engagement to support a socially just and ecologically sustainable world. 

Given human-caused climate change, there is an urgent need for research and its application to help advance solutions for climate mitigation and adaptation. The successful candidate will lead an impactful research and engagement program that contributes to positive change for climate solutions and sustainability. We solicit applications from interdisciplinary natural scientists. Potential topics of interest include applied climate science and modeling that informs forward-looking decision-making; climate change adaptation and mitigation that contributes to sustainable development pathways; Indigenous approaches and perspectives for climate adaptation and resilience; and climate change resilience in social-ecological systems.

The successful candidate will be appointed as the inaugural holder of a research chair, the Liber Ero Chair in Climate Action and Sustainability. This endowed research chair is subject to renewal after an initial five-year appointment. The research chair endowment may provide partial teaching relief and additional resources to the chairholder, subject to negotiations. The successful Chair in Climate Action and Sustainability will deliver an impactful research and engagement program.

We invite applications from Ph.D. scientists with demonstrated expertise in the interdisciplinary aspects of climate science and sustainability. PhD candidates with solid indication of imminent completion may be hired at the rank of Instructor and will be promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor upon completion of the PhD. The position will contribute climate-related courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in REM, effectively bridging concepts from multiple disciplines to provide a holistic view of the complexities of natural resources and environmental management. The successful candidate will develop a nationally and internationally recognized program of research, teaching, engagement, and knowledge mobilization aimed at improving decision-making and climate outcomes. Potential courses associated with the position include Introductions to Resource Management (REM 100, REM 200) and Climate Science (REM 334 Earth’s Past Climates, 431/631 Climate Change and Environmental Management). This position aims to maintain these critical contributions in REM, while continuing to build interconnections with other natural and social scientists in REM, the Faculty of Environment, and SFU.

The expected start date is July 1, 2025.
