The SFU Student Development and Programming Centre (SDPC) offers a variety of resources and services that help create opportunities for holistic student development and encourage community involvement. The SDPC offers programming to new students, through Orientation and Mentorship programs, to current students, through Community Building, Leadership, and Volunteer programs, and to parents to help them support their students. Students with Disabilities at the SDPC

The SDPC is committed to ensuring that its programs and services are inclusive and accessible to all students. For instance, all students are welcome to attend Discover SFU New Student Orientation, and the SDPC will work with the CAL to ensure that any students with disabilities receive the proper supports. 

Students with disabilities are also encouraged to volunteer for SDPC programs, such as Orientation, Foodbank, LEAD, Peer Programs and more, and the SDPC will work with individuals on a case-by-case basis to ensure they have a meaningful volunteer experience. For example, one of the 2007 New Student Orientation Leaders (who lead clans on the days of Orientation, coordinate mentorship events throughout students’ first semester, and answer questions about what it is like to be a new student) brought a unique perspective to the event as a wheelchair user.

External Volunteer Resources - Go Volunteer

The Student Development and Programming Centre also partners with www.govolunteer.ca, a Human Resources Development Canada project which features volunteer positions available in the community. Go Volunteer encourages volunteer employers to indicate if their position is open to persons with disabilities, and many of the postings are. When searching for a position, you may use the advanced search function to screen for positions that are open to people with a physical or developmental challenge.
