Diving Salmon (Animated Beautiful Machine)
By: Nathan Lew
Course: IAT 106 Spatial Thinking and Communicating
Project description: Diving Salmon was my take on the Animated Beautiful Machine project for IAT 106—it was inspired by the arching motions of salmon leaping over rivers and waterfalls during the fall as they attempt to return to their birthplace. The machine is powered by a crank, turning the 3-bar linkage mechanism for the salmon to dive in one big leap and a smaller resurfacing arc as it attempts to get past the river. A secondary motion of rushing water amidst the rocky riverbed is created using a pulley system, borrowing the movement of the crank.
