Awards and scholarships
Simon Fraser University expresses its commitment to excellence by offering a number of scholarships and awards. Listed below are several awards that are for School of Interactive Arts & Technology undergraduate students. There are also other scholarships, bursaries, and award available through SFU Financial Aid and Awards that students may meet the requirements for.
Awards
The Cody Sawatsky Memorial Award in Gaming was established in 2017 with generous gifts from the Sawatsky family.
Cody was an engaged and driven SIAT alumnus who was very successful as a video game producer and designer in Vancouver.
One or more awards, valued at a minimum of $1,000, will be granted to a SIAT student who has completed courses in digital game programming, foundational or advanced game design, or other future gaming-related course work and who meet the following criteria:
- are enrolled full-time in a Bachelor's degree program in the School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT);
- have successfully completed course work in one of the following subject areas within SIAT in the previous term: digital game programming; foundational or advanced game design; or other future gaming-related course work offered in SIAT as part of a Bachelor's degree;
- are in good academic standing; and
- have demonstrated outstanding project work within the completed course work.
Cody's family presents the award to a deserving SIAT student at an intimate event.
How to apply
Students wishing to be considered for the award should submit the nomination form with the "student information" section of the form completed along with a brief statement of interest to our advising team at siatadv@sfu.ca outlining courses taken or projects completed in one of the following subject areas:
- digital game programming;
- foundational or advanced game design;
- or other future gaming-related course work offered in SIAT as part of a Bachelor's degree.
Application period: August 26-September 13, 2024
INNOEC Community Service Award
One award, valued at a minimum of $1,000, will be granted annually in any term to an undergraduate student who meets the following criteria:
- is enrolled full-time in a Bachelor's degree program in the School of Interactive Arts and Technology;
- is in good academic standing; and
- has demonstrated positive contributions to the SFU and/or external community including leadership or volunteerism.
Applications must include:
- a resume and cover letter outlining the applicant's demonstrated a history of positive contributions to the SFU and/or external community including leadership and/or volunteerism
- a letter of reference from someone who can verify the involvement and the impact of the applicant's role.
- Nomination form with the "student information" section of the form completed.

The award will be granted by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee upon the recommendation of the Director, School of Interactive Arts and Technology.

Bursaries
UWCV Undergraduate Bursary in Interactive Arts and Technology
Will be granted annually in any term to an undergraduate student who meets the following criteria:
- is enrolled full-time in the School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT) in Faculty of Communication, Arts and Technology;
- is in good academic standing; and has demonstrated financial need.
Preference will be given to female students and to those who are registered in or have successfully completed one or more of the following upper division Games or Animation Stream courses in SIAT (may change): 312 IAT; 410 IAT; 343 IAT; and/or, 445 IAT.

Applications for this bursary can be made directly to Financial Aid & Awards. The bursary will be administered by the office of Financial Aid and Awards and granted by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee.
Matthew Edward Harris Bursary in the School of Interactive Arts & Technology
Granted annually in any term to undergraduate students who meet the following criteria:
- are enrolled full-time in the term of eligibility;
- are pursuing a bachelor's degree in the School of Interactive Arts and Technology;
- are in good academic standing;
- and have demonstrated financial need.
The bursary is administered by the office of Financial Aid and Awards and granted by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee.

Scholarships
