Alice Fleerackers
Alice Fleerackers is a researcher and lab manager at the ScholCommLab and a doctoral student at Simon Fraser University’s Interdisciplinary Studies program, where she works under the supervision of Dr. Juan Pablo Alperin to explore how health science is communicated online.
Her doctoral research is supported by a Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship from SSHRC and a Michael Stevenson Graduate Scholarship from SFU.
Alice holds a Master in Publishing from SFU and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia (major: Psychology, minor: English Literature). Currently, she volunteers with a number of non-profit organizations to help foster public understanding and engagement with science. She is a Research Officer at Art the Science, Academic Liaison of Science Borealis, Board Member of the Science Writers and Communicators of Canada, and a member of the Scientific Committee for the Public Communication of Science and Technology Network (PCST). She is also a freelance health and science writer whose work has appeared in the Globe and Mail, National Post, and Nautilus, among other outlets. Over her more than 8 years of experience as a professional communicator, she’s had the pleasure of interviewing psychologists, media specialists, anthropologists, and many others on everything from the psychology of society’s cat video addiction to the science behind astrological belief.
