Postdoctoral Fellow Profile: Priyanka Mishra
Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Postdoctoral Fellow in the Faculty of Sciences
I am a postdoctoral researcher in Pio lab in the Molecular Biology and Biochemistry department, SFU. I enjoy my work with sheer passion. To me, office desk is the more awesome place than the coffee table. Stealing time away from work I travel to explore the unseen and get out on the dance floor. Reading novels, watching my favourite sport Cricket, spending time on social media keeps my life jam-packed. On the top of everything, I keep my faith and love with God and Family!
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO SFU?
I have a keen interest in bioinformatics. I found Dr. Pio's lab which works on designing and testing bioinformatics pipelines to discover novel genes and biological pathways. His research studies interested me and I found the opportunity to continue expanding my knowledge in this topic.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESEARCH AND/OR PROGRAM.
My research background is well-varied, yet it’s oddly congruent at the same time. As a master’s graduate, I worked in the plant pathology field. So, I developed a strong foundation in and passion for disease biology early on. My PhD was in evolutionary genetics with the core focus of research in Sennoside drug characterization and validation in crude drugs. I developed and tested the molecular signature in monitoring adulteration of Senna drug in Indian herbal market. For my postdoctoral work, I sort of merged all my past research experiences and delved into viral immunity. Specifically, I am working on to identify and characterize new candidate proteins by integrating structural bioinformatics, biochemical and reverse proteomic approach.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT SFU?
SFU is a great place to work on word-class research with genius scientists, postdocs and graduate researchers. I enjoy the research workshops offered by Research Commons at SFU specifically the workshop in R and Python. Events by SFU Postdoc association and SFU-Omics group are always very gainful.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR PROSPECTIVE GRADUATE STUDENTS/POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS?
SFU have an amazingly diverse geniuses under one roof.
