Murder in the Classroom: Crime Scene Investigation of Sexual Homicide
Ideal for: Law Studies, Explorations in Social Studies, and Career Education
NOTE:
This session is now only available from January 2025 onwards.
What makes someone kill? This is a question you might have seen detectives on TV ask all the time. This presentation will help students start to think of answers to this question by teaching them about criminal profiling and crime scene investigations for sexual homicide cases. Students will learn about the facts the media often gets wrong about homicide, go through the different types of crime scenes, and be given the opportunity to apply their knowledge to real-life cases.
*Content warning – this presentation will include some intense discussions of death, murder, and crime scene investigations.
Speaker
Hana Georgoulis (she/her) is a PhD student in Criminology at Simon Fraser University, but she wasn’t always interested in studying crime. During high school and university, Hana wanted to become a doctor, but took a class on law that introduced her to the study of serial killers. Now, Hana researches violent crimes, with a focus on sexually-motivated homicide. For her PhD, she is looking at how the victims of these crimes might help explain the homicide and the motivations of the offender. When she’s not at school, Hana can be found baking cookies or watching hockey.
