About the Role

Position Summary

The state of wildfire in BC is at a critical tipping point, posing a threat to the continued health, viability, and vibrance of our communities and ecosystems at the same time as offering strong inroads for action and collaboration. 

In this role, you will be a part of connecting local action to systemic change, and to collectively advancing solutions. You will use dialogue to support shaping a new relationship with fire across BC– one in which we learn to steward and coexist with fire. Backed by the internationally recognized Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue at SFU, Canada’s engaged university, you will bring together local actors to help to build towards real-world solutions to wildfire.

Full Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Designs and implements an ecosystem of networks for Wildfire Resilience and Mitigation by:

  • Engaging with collaborators and rightsholders from across BC to co-create the architecture for networks.
  • Partnering with key stakeholders to co-design, implement, and scale up networks.
  • Working closely with the Project Manager, Knowledge & Extension, to ensure workflow alignment.
  • Exploring pedagogical approaches for building networks and communities of practice to foster wildfire resilience, including creative, story-based, dialogic etc.
  • Ensuring that networks center most impacted communities and populations and that they feed into governance and co-creating pathways forward.
  • Developing ideas for network engagement.
  • Establishing feedback mechanisms to ensure networks are accountable to and continuously adapting and evolving to meet the needs of communities of practice.
  • Designing networks grounded trust, accountability and dialogue to move towards collective action.

2. Fosters collaborative relationships with diverse rightsholders, stakeholders, partners, and impacted groups from across British-Columbia (BC) and beyond by:

  • Building relationships with under-served communities to seek equitable participation, co-develop programming and remove barriers to participation.
  • Collaborating with SFU initiatives, including but not limited to Community Centered Climate Innovation (C3I), the Fire & Ecosystems Research Lab, the Murphy Watershed Science Lab, the Planetary Health Research Group, the School of Public Policy etc.
  • Working with Associate Director to bridge governance efforts & relationships Work with Associate Director to bridge governance efforts & relationships for Mitigating Wildfire Initiative.

3. Supports reciprocal partnerships and financial sustainability for the networks by:

  • Building reciprocal relationships with partners, foundations and donors.
  • Identifying fundraising opportunities and meeting with prospective partners or clients to secure new grants or contracts.
  • Negotiating external partnership agreements, grant contributions, and/or service agreements for approval, while ensuring alignment with the Centre’s mission and values.
  • Designing and implementing appropriate financial record keeping, reporting and tracking systems in collaboration with SFU staff and departments.
  • Providing quarterly milestone progress reports, budget forecasts, and cash flow projections to Assistant Director.

4. Manages Networks Sub-Initiative within Mitigating Wildfire Initiative by:

  • Overseeing budgetary and administrative processes.
  • Developing and implementing work plans.
  • Conducting hiring as needed and managing junior staff and contractors brought onboard for Wildfire Networks.
  • ]Maintaining regular communication with Associate Director addressing anticipated challenges as they arise.
  • Planning and facilitating dialogic and engagement events.
  • Carrying out other duties related to leading the creation and implementation of Networks for Wildfire Resilience.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree Environmental Studies, Political Sciences or relevant discipline and five years of relevant experience in areas such as stakeholder engagement, public participation, Indigenous dialogue methods, public policy, project management, or an equivalent combination of education, training, professional certifications and experience.

  • Advanced knowledge in designing and implementing dialogue and engagement initiatives
  • Advanced knowledge of the state of play of wildfire resilience and stewardship in BC, including community, research, and policy 
  • Excellent understanding of the role that dialogue and networks can play in building wildfire resilience
  • Excellent knowledge of participatory engagement processes and working with groups traditionally under-served by government or facing barriers to participation
  • Experience supporting Indigenous sovereignty and stewardship
  • Experience building and holding trusting relationships with diverse rightsholders, stakeholders, and partners
  • Excellent interpersonal and decision-making skills, including the ability to hold space for complexity, nuance, and trauma, and discernment and compassion in interactions
  • Excellent skills in facilitation, mediation, and community engagement
  • Advanced project management, budget planning, and financial management skills
  • Excellent partnership brokering, fundraising and grant writing skills
  • Advanced conflict resolution, strategic planning, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent leadership, mentoring, and teamwork skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written, verbal and presentation)
  • Ability to triage competing tasks, work with dynamic and shifting targets, and align workflow with the parallel knowledge extension efforts within the Mitigating Wildfire Initiative
