Biography
Keiten (pronounced Key-ten or Key) Brown is Secwépemc from Bonaparte First Nation in the Interior of British Columbia, Canada on her maternal side and French-Canadian and mixed European Ancestry on her paternal side. She is currently resides as an uninvited guest on the unceded and occupied ancestral territories of the lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples, colonially known as Victoria, British Columbia.
Academically, Keiten holds a Bachelor of Science in Global Resource Systems with a particular emphasis on Indigenous health from the University of British Columbia.
In addition to her formal education, Keiten brings over 5 years of experience working with First Nations communities, organizations, and research projects. Most recently she was a research assistant for an Indigenous led, Covid-19 research project funded through Canada’s Covid-19 Immunity Task Force with the Nuu-Chah-Nulth Tribal Council, Simon Fraser University, and the National Microbiology Lab. Through reciprocal relationships and a community centered approach, the project explored community vaccine efficacy, covid-19 community impacts, and the development of cultural safe protocols.
In her current role as an Indigenous Health Research Associate, Keiten channels her passions for Indigenous Peoples health and wellness, art, protecting traditional knowledge, ecological health, fostering vibrant communities, social justice, and cultivating meaningful relationships. She eagerly embraces the opportunity to contribute her knowledge to a project that centralizes the wellness and wisdom of Indigenous Peoples, their intricate relationship with biodiversity, and their essential roles in conservation efforts. She looks forward to learning from Indigenous communities globally while also sharing her own insights to advance this crucial work.
Outside of work, Keiten enjoys spending time with her dog and partner, surfing, dancing, traveling, creating art, spending time on the land, learning Spanish, and sunny days.
