Who we are 

The Centre for Collaborative Action on Indigenous Health Governance (CCAIHG) is the first of its kind Indigenous health governance research centre that paves a transformative path for Indigenous people, communities, and scholars to learn from and share their experiences on Indigenous health governance. With a shared governance model that reflects the partnership of SFU and the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA), the CCAIHG fosters global dialogue on Indigenous approaches to health and wellness in the context of Indigenous health governance. The key goals of the centre focus on dialogue and knowledge exchange, mentorship, and research. 

We respectfully and gratefully acknowledge the CCAIHG is on unceded Coast Salish Territory; the traditional lands of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), Kwikwetlem (kʷikʷəƛ̓əm), q̓íc̓əy̓ (Katzie), Qayqayt, Kwantlen, Semiahmoo and Tsawwassen peoples.

CCAIHG will work to consolidate local and global Indigenous perspectives through dialogue, knowledge exchange and collaborative research, mentorship, and service delivery initiatives, while focusing on Indigenous-governed approaches to health and wellness. The Centre aims to promote a culturally safe research environment while centering Indigenous ways of knowing and respectfully engaging and collaborating with Indigenous communities, collectives and organizations.

Vision

We are committed to contributing to improved health outcomes for Indigenous peoples (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) in BC and Indigenous peoples globally through a focus on Indigenous governance, Nation-rebuilding, and reconciliaction.

Spring 2017: Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences submits a proposal for the establishment of a "Centre for Collaborative Action on Indigenous Health Governance" in collaboration with partners at the First Nations Health Authority. Summer 2017: The Senate Community on University Planning (SCUP) approved the proposal for the establishment of the Centre. Summer 2020-2022: Search for the Research Chair in Indigenous Health Governance commences. In August 2022, Dr. Jeffrey Reading was announced Co-Director of CCAIHG. Fall 2022: CCAIHG welcomes Dr. Krista Stelkia as Co-Director and Anita Manshadi as Research Manager of the Centre. Fall 2023: Governing Council and Elder Advisors will be established to advise and support the centre's vision of advancing the health and wellness of Indigenous Peoples. Summer 2024: The CCAIHG team are collaborating on a variety of projects (i.e., recruiting an Indigenous artist to create a logo design, centre renovation etc.) and are preparing to plan for an open ceremony of the Centre in Summer 2024.
