We felt that this novel is difficult to describe, it's one of those 'you just have to read it' kind of books. One might call it a ghost story, a redemption story, a journey to self-acceptance, or notes on the value of family (whether by blood or choice). It touches on a wide array of topics including incarceration, Indigenous history, cultural celebration & appropriation, motherhood, the pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement and police brutality.
Some of us expressed uneasiness about reliving the collective fear and melancholy of the COVID shutdown and BLM protests. Overall, everyone was entertained by the well-developed characters and felt the comedic moments and dialogue helped to balance out some of the heavier topics.
