We have a roster of highly successful FASS graduate students who are keen to share their research and career journeys with your students. Each speaker will bring a unique perspective to their presentation and will add value to the learning experience by sharing their knowledge and expertise in a humanities and social sciences subject.

Populism, Regionalism, and Extremism in Canada: Understanding some -isms of politics

Ideal for: Political Studies, Explorations in Social Studies, and Career Education
We hear politicians labelled as populists, regionalists, and extremists all the time, but what does that really mean? Based on a lecture from POL 101, this course carries a brief presentation on each of the three title concepts, including ideologically diverse examples from Canadian history. The majority of the lesson consists of hands on group activities where the students can analyse and discuss regionalism and populism in current (but relatively docile) examples.
Speaker
Timothy van den Brink (he/him) is a doctoral candidate in SFU Political Science, with an MA and BA from the University of Alberta's Campus Saint-Jean. His research and teaching work has largely focused on right-wing politics and ideologies in Canada. Timothy grew up in South Delta, and has a deep appreciation for the lower mainland's perpetual rain and mountain presence.
