Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at SFU: May in Review

May 30, 2024

SFU continues to work towards a more equitable, diverse and inclusive environment on all our campuses for all individuals. Here is a snapshot of EDI at SFU in May.

Developing SFU’s first Accessibility Plan

The SFU Accessibility Committee is developing the university’s first accessibility plan to support an SFU where all people can fully and meaningfully participate.

To aid in the development of the plan, the committee is seeking input from key groups through in-person consultations and a survey. Online sessions for students who identify as neurodivergent, have a disability or condition or are advocates for accessibility were held between May 22-May 29. Another session for students will be available on June 13 and registration will open soon.

The survey is open for SFU faculty, staff, students and alumni to share their input on strengths and opportunities related to accessibility until June 21.  Share your thoughts on accessibility at SFU.

Data collection for Pay Transparency Report

As part of B.C.’s new Pay Transparency Act, SFU is required to collect gender data from their employees according to the new Gender and Sex Data Standard to prepare a Pay Transparency Report. All employees are asked to help SFU comply with this year’s requirement by updating their information no later than July 30, 2024.

To support data collection for this report, SFU has added a new “Gender” tile in the MyInfo system. While logged in, employees can also update their emergency contact information, address and personal phone number.

Log into MyInfo to complete updates here: myinfo.sfu.ca

*Please note, for those who are off-campus, they will need to log into VPN before logging into MyInfo.

Demographic & Diversity Data survey coming soon

In Fall 2024, SFU will be launching a comprehensive demographics and diversity data collection survey that will help meet other regulatory requirements, provide information to support equitable and accountable decision-making and measure progress towards our institutional priorities.

Over the past few months, the Data Taskforce has been meeting with key stakeholder groups, including student associations, to gather input and feedback. A session with the Indigenous community at SFU also took place in May, sharing updates on the Indigenous Welcoming Procedures and information about the upcoming Demographic & Diversity Data survey.

Along with the Pay Transparency Report and data from the survey in the fall, SFU can make more informed decisions that will support and meet the needs of our community.
