Our Services & Work
The Equity Office supports the university’s academic mission by ensuring SFU is in compliance with legal and regulatory frameworks at the provincial and federal level and Canadian equity, diversity and inclusion standards and requirements for accreditation. Through partnerships with leaders and units across the university, the Equity Office team provides timely, evidence-informed guidance to support the implementation of equitable and inclusive practices. These areas are guided by the strategic goals outlined in the Equity Compass, which provides direction for the realization of SFU’s equity and belonging value. Systems and Structures That Support Respect, Inclusion & Belonging
Equity Compass Goal One
We are committed to building a culture of inclusive excellence. This includes ensuring compliance with EDI-related legislation and institutional commitments for equity-deserving groups.
Ongoing work:
- Accessibility Plan and Accessibility Committee
- Project planning for equitable hiring and program development
- Support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community at SFU
Governance, Monitoring and Reporting
Equity Compass Goal Two
We support the development and monitoring of equity, diversity and inclusion metrics to ensure institutional accountability to Equity Compass priorities and commitments. We work closely with policy authorities to ensure equity legislation is reflected in proposed policy updates.

- Policy revisions and updates
- EDI leadership development program (in progress)
Education & Capacity-Building
Equity Compass Goal Three
We develop and amplify a variety of resources to enable equity, diversity and inclusion education and capacity-building, in response to the evolving needs of the SFU community.
Ongoing work:
- Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Community of Practice,
- EDI resources
- EDI training for service support teams (offered on request)
Employment and Pay Equity
Equity Compass Goal Four
In partnership with the People Strategies team and employee groups, we ensure equitable employment and pay equity commitments are met, in compliance with provincial and federal legislation.
Ongoing work:
- Updating government and collective agreement requirements for bias training
- Supporting EDI commitments in faculty and staff recruitment and
- Integration of Special Programs supports
Equity Data
Equity Compass Goal Five
In alignment with institutional goals to improve data-driven decision-making and governance, the Equity Office works to collect quantitative and qualitative demographic data that helps meet the university’s regulatory and legislative requirements.
Ongoing work: Demographic & Data Diversity Survey, co-led by the Equity Office and Office of Institutional Research and Planning.
