Summer 2023 Semester

Revival of SFU Queer Graduate, Faculty and Staff Network (QGFSN)

The QGFSN launched in 2014 under the leadership of three graduate students who sought to build community between graduate students, staff, and faculty at SFU, noticing that these demographics often didn’t participate in Out on Campus events. The network operated with collaboration from Out on Campus and the Graduate Student Society, and held regular events including workshops and pub nights. Due to funding challenges, the network has not held events since 2017, but still maintains a listserv. SFU’s participation in this year’s Pride Parade is an excellent opportunity to revive this network and see the community grow. To join:

  1. Go to maillist.sfu.ca and log in with your SFU credentials.
  2. In the “Go to list” field, type in “queer-grad-fac-staff” then click “go”
  3. Click “join” to request membership. The moderator will review your request shortly.

The listserv is currently moderated by Leah Wiener, queer staff member in student services. Anyone with questions about the listserv or network is welcome to contact Leah at queer-gfs-contact@sfu.ca.

SFU Career and Volunteer Services publishes Black Student Career Resources Guide

Created by a BIPOC Career Peer Advisor at SFU Career and Volunteer Services (CVS), these resources are designed to support Black students at all stages of their professional journey, from exploring career options to securing meaningful employment. The peer advisor, Maryam, also wrote about her experience creating the guide.

CVS is also developing more career resource guides for equity-deserving groups, to minimize difficulties in finding and keeping jobs due to systemic barriers and discrimination.
