History

The David and Cecilia Ting Forums on Justice Policy began in 1994, as the Ting Lectures were organized on an ad hoc basis by staff and faculty from Continuing Studies and the School of Criminology at Simon Fraser University. Tackling emerging controversial policy issues in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and internationally, these events brought together academics, the public and private sectors and the media in non-partisan dialogue through lectures, conferences, seminars, publications and television broadcasts.

The objective was to inform public policy formulation and law reform through thorough issue analysis and the generation of potential solutions.

Early Ting Lectures included a National Symposium on Lotteries and Gambling in Canada and a series of lectures and dialogues on public opinion and the law.

The David and Cecilia Ting Forum on Justice Policy 2001-Present

In 2001, with a growing programming focus on justice and the law, and the high profile and international reputation of the School of Criminology at Simon Fraser University, the Ting Lectures evolved into the David and Cecilia Ting Forums on Justice Policy housed within the School of Criminology. The forums and lectures were developed under the leadership of Professor Robert Gordon, Director of the School of Criminology from 1998-2013.

Attracting large numbers of participants to its programs, the Ting Forum on Justice Policy focuses on presenting and debating critical new research, new and pending legislation and policy changes, and emerging issues to a broad cross-section of the justice system and the community, across Canada and beyond.
