We are seeking a Research Assistant to support our efforts in assessing Canada's contribution to addressing the global climate crisis from an equity perspective. This position involves conducting in-depth research to analyze Canada's historical positions and actions in global climate negotiations, particularly regarding international climate finance, and comparing them to its commitments and obligations within an equity framework.
This position will run May-August, 2024. It requires a commitment of at least 15 hours per week. Hourly rate is $30-35/hour commensurate with experience.
Candidates from equity seeking groups, including Black, Indigenous and racialized people, people facing accessibility barriers, and 2SLGBTQIA+ people and people from low-income backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
**This position is only open to current SFU graduate students.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct a comprehensive literature review of Canada's statements and actions at international climate negotiations and summits, focusing on climate finance commitments and their implementation.
Analyze Canada's contributions to international climate finance, including finance for mitigation, adaptation, and loss & damage, in comparison to other similar jurisdictions.
Collaborate with partner organizations, such as Third World Network and Climate Action Network Canada (CAN-Rac), to gather relevant data and insights.
Apply an equity lens throughout the research project, citing experts and research that reflects the perspectives and interests of the Global South.
Synthesize research findings into accessible and compelling reports and presentations for dissemination to politically active diasporic communities, federal ministers and cabinet members, and the broader climate justice movement.
Support grassroots campaigning efforts by providing evidence-based analysis and recommendations to demand Canada's commitment to paying its fair share of climate costs, particularly in advance of the 2024 UN climate summit (COP29).
Qualifications:
Graduate degree (MA or PhD) in international relations, public policy, or other related areas (e.g. environmental studies, political science, communication, sociology, etc.). MA students who are near completion and current PhD students are encouraged to apply.
Bachelor's or Master's degree in environmental studies, international relations, public policy, or a related field.
Strong research skills, with experience conducting literature reviews, analyzing complex data sets, and synthesizing information from diverse sources.
Knowledge of global climate governance, international climate finance mechanisms, and equity frameworks in the context of climate justice.
Familiarity with the perspectives and priorities of civil society groups and experts from the Global South on climate issues.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present findings in a clear, concise, and compelling manner.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Commitment to social justice, equity, and environmental sustainability.
