Yuriy Zaliznyak

Yuriy Zaliznyak (Ph.D.) is an Associate Professor of Journalism at the Ivan Franko University of Lviv. Since 2001, he has been an intern, reporter, editor and anchor in local, national and international newsrooms including BBC Ukrainian Service (2002-2003), The Guardian (2003) and Radio Deutsche Welle (2004-2006). As a Fulbright Scholar, he spent the 2018-2019 academic year at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a project on fake news influence on journalism. After returning to Ukraine, he served as an expert and coordinator for the Pylyp Orlyk Institute of Democracy, being responsible for the regional press monitoring research on media standards. In February 2022, he became a local producer and reporter with ABC News covering the unprovoked Russian war against Ukraine. He spent the 2023-2024 academic year as a Non-Resident Fellow at the George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (IERES) – his Petrach Program on Ukraine project was about cognitive warfare challenge for media standards of war coverage in Ukraine.

Yuriy’s current scope of scholarly interests includes journalism standards and information manipulation, media ethics, social media, and cognitive warfare.
