Let's Get Ready for School: Volunteer

Help empower children and their parents as they navigate life in Canada.

The SFU Surrey – TD Community Engagement Centre works with the  DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society (DCRS) to provide SFU students with an enriching volunteer opportunity through DCRS's Let's Get Ready for School program.

This program focuses on meeting the needs of the entire family, with a strong emphasis on getting children ready for Kindergarten. The program's main objective is to improve children's skills in play, socialization, communication, fine motor and gross motor skills. In addition, parents are provided with special sessions to assist them in preparing their children for Kindergarten.

Your role:

As a program volunteer, you will help the program staff support infants, toddlers and children conversational skills.

In this role, you will:

  • Acquire knowledge about the Let's Get Ready for School (LGRS) program curriculum.
  • Apply learned knowledge of the program as well as interpersonal, communication, cross-cultural awareness and instructional skills by assisting in the delivery of program activities.
  • Apply learned knowledge of the program curriculum by coming up with new ideas for activities, or by altering existing activities to meet the needs and interests of the children attending the program.
  • Apply interpersonal, empathy and relationship-building skills by developing healthy relationships with the children in the program.

Program Logistics

  • August 20th to 23rd (Tuesday to Friday)
  • Time:  From 9:00 am to 1:00 pm
  • Location: DIVERSEcity’s First Steps Centre, #201-7380 King George Boulevard, Surrey, BC, V3W 5A5 

 Mandatory Volunteer Training:

 Volunteers will be contacted on a one-on-one basis to schedule their volunteer orientations. 

Requirements:

To thrive in this role, you should:

  • Be a current SFU student (undergraduate, graduate, or continuing studies) or SFU alumni.
  • Be passionate about helping those in the community and making a difference;
  • Cultivate a positive and energetic attitude;
  • Have a strong commitment to fostering a supportive team environment;
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Be excited to work with people with diverse backgrounds and personalities;
  • Have experience or a strong interest in working with children, youth, and newcomers to Canada;
  • Be dependable, flexible and resourceful;
  • Provide DCRS with a copy of a Police Information Check.
