Top co-op student
SFU student Jan Verspoor is Canada’s co-op student of the year, an award presented by the Canadian Association for Co-operative Education. He also holds SFU’s 2004 Alumni Association outstanding student leadership award, and an SFU co-op student of the year award.
Verspoor completed a self-directed international work term last summer in the Cayman Islands where he worked as a field assistant to an SFU PhD candidate collecting data on health indicators for the southern stingray. In a previous co-op placement he was a member of a specialized research team with Environment Canada’s Pacific Environment Science Centre.
During the fall 2004 semester, Verspoor combined his love of sports and his interest in helping people by volunteering to lead international sports camps for underprivileged children in war-torn countries such as Bosnia, Romania, Croatia and Iran.
