Program Structure

SFU Linguistics offers four options to pursue a Master of Arts:

Our PhD program is a thriving program with a long history of producing successful graduates who go on to valuable careers in linguistics and related fields. Many recent graduates from our PhD program have obtained teaching and research positions at universities across the globe.

We also offer a graduate certificate in Indigenous languages and linguistics (INLL GC), and an MA in Indigenous languages and linguistics (INLL MA). SFU is committed to providing academic experiences and credentials that have value for Indigenous students and others who wish to explore Indigenous studies. SFU offers a variety of financial assistance opportunities to Canadian Indigenous students.

About SFU Linguistics

Located atop Burnaby Mountain in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, SFU Linguistics is a place where diverse methodologies and theoretical perspectives are combined to create innovative approaches to the study of language. Graduate students in our program engage in challenging coursework and enjoy unique research opportunities while working toward a certificate, MA or PhD.

Graduates of our MA program have gained PhD admission here at SFU and at institutions worldwide, including Yale University, Northwestern University, University of Edinburgh, Massachussets Institute of Technology, University of Amsterdam, and University of Toronto.

Our PhD graduates have attained faculty positions on our campus and at California State University, University of Salzburg, University of Cologne, University of British Columbia and others.
