Convocation reception
Celebrating our new Linguistics graduates
By Nicole North
Congratulations to all of our new Linguistics graduates! We are proud of their dedication, commitment, and hard work. Linguistics graduates crossed the stage at Convocation Mall during the morning graduation ceremony on June 11, 2024. Daisy Choi delivered an inspiring Student Speaker address during the ceremony (see video below). You can read her profile story here.
There was light rain during the ceremony, but the sun began to shine once the Linguistics Reception started at noon in RCB 7402. New graduates, their guests, faculty, MA and PhD students, undergraduate Linguistics Student Union (LSU) volunteers, and staff all gathered together to celebrate. Volunteers and members of staff greeted attendees, handed out name tags and door prize tickets, and captured Polaroid pictures at the photo booth.
Undergraduate Curriculum Chair Dr. Chung-hye Han picked the winning door prize tickets and presented the winners with a gift certificate. Each new graduate was given a gift bag with an SFU Linguisitics coffee mug, LSU giveaway items, and a congratulations card from the Department.
Acting Chair Dr. Henny Yeung addressed the attendees to congratulate our graduates and emphasize that new alumni are encouraged to stay in touch with the Department and provide updates on their future endeavours.
Daisy Choi delivered a Student Speaker convocation speech about Indigenous language revitalization at SFU Linguistics, the multiple pathways an education at our department offers its students, and the spirit of community at SFU.
