The Department of Linguistics at SFU is pleased to announce the establishment of an Essay Prize to commemorate Yvonne Joan Kathleen Becker, an alumnus and significant benefactor of the department. The prize recipient will be awarded $500 and honoured at the annual Yvonne Becker colloquium, which will take place on May 11, 2023.

Eligibility Criteria
In order to be eligible, a submission must be from a current undergraduate student in good standing who is undertaking a major, joint major or minor in Linguistics. The essay should be between 3,500 and 7,500 words and supported with a letter of nomination from an instructor in the Linguistics, Indigenous Languages, or Cognitive Science Programs at SFU. The essay may be the result of course work in one of these programs or independently composed.

Selection Criteria
The successful essay will stand out for the originality of its ideas, understanding of linguistic concepts and clarity of expression.

Submission
The deadline for submission is Friday, April 28, 2023. Please submit your essay as a Word file, along with a letter of support from the nominating instructor, to lingchr@sfu.ca and cc lingasst@sfu.ca.
