Philosophy Grad Student Handbook | Philosophy Grads

The Philosophy Department at Simon Fraser University offers Graduate degrees at both the Masters and the PhD level. The department is particularly strong in Ethics, Philosophy of Mind, and Logic, but we also have expertise in various topics in Metaphysics, Epistemology, Philosophy of Science, History of Early Modern Philosophy and of the foundations of Analytic Philosophy, Philosophy of language, and other areas (see the catalogue of faculty research interests). In addition, SFU Graduate students can take advantage of the expertise offered the Philosophy Department at the University of British Columbia by taking UBC courses or having UBC faculty as members of their supervisory committees.

Our Graduate programme has undergone a series of revisions over the past few years and is a small but expanding one. We are especially proud of our two innovative MA programmes, quite possibly unique in North America. One of our MA tracks is quite standard, involving doing coursework in philosophy, and it can be pursued with either a non-thesis or a thesis option. The second MA track is project focused, and it is geared toward students who plan to go into either a specialized program such a Logic or an interdisciplinary one such as Cognitive Science or Public Policy. Completion of this sort of MA involves doing coursework related to a project and completing a specialized thesis. We have also worked very hard on structuring our PhD programme to make sure our graduates emerge with both a solid philosophical education and the best possible dissertation in hand.

The Philosophy Graduate Student Handbook contains further information on choosing one of our graduate programmes, admissions criteria and procedures, financial support, as well as the degree requirements of the programmes themselves

Our philosophy graduate students have their own website, and you may want to look there for further information.
