Transportation Footprint

What’s the issue with Transportation?

Transportation is the second largest contributor to our ecological footprint. As can be seen in the graph, most of this is due to fuel consumption of private vehicles.

In addition to fueling our private vehicles, the very act of making a vehicle can be costly to our environment due to the cost of transporting and using materials during production. For the short-term, car (preferably electric) sharing programs are an excellent way of reducing this demand for cars and reducing our city’s fuel cost.

What should we do?

Using public transit is a much more efficient use of our limited resources. When trips are short, it’s best to walk or use a bicycle. As our city becomes more dense, people should try to adopt a lifestyle that incorporates using mixed modes of transportation. As mentioned before, walking and cycling are great for small distances whereas public transit can be used for long commutes.
