Black History Month 2024
February is Black History Month. This year, SFU has adopted the theme “Building Connections for Black Flourishing” in alignment with the Scarborough Charter. Join in across the university as we celebrate Black history, culture and contributions to SFU—find a guide to activities at SFU and in the local community below.

BHM Kickoff Opening Ceremony
February 1 | SUB Social Stage | 3 - 5 p.m.
Join SFU Students of Caribbean and African Ancestry (SOCA) as they launch Black History Month. The event theme, "African Americans and the Arts" starts off the celebrations happening throughout the month of February.
Bennett Library Black History Month Display
February 1-27 | Bennett Library (Burnaby Campus)
Visit the in-person book display on Black History Month curated by SFU Students of Caribbean and African Ancestry (SOCA).
Black History Month Movie & Trivia Night
February 9 | SUB 1430 | 6 - 10 p.m.
Join SFU SOCA in celebration of Black History with a screening of The Color Purple, as well as fun, refreshments, trivia and prizes.
In conversation with the Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine
February 13 | Online | 1:00 p.m.
Join SFU’s Equity Office for this Black History Month-featured virtual event. Moderated by Dr. Yabome Gilpin-Jackson, Augustine and Gilpin-Jackson share their expertise on leadership and Black flourishing in the 21st Century.
Afro Fusion Workshop
February 16 | SUB 2410 | 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
This Afro Dance workshop hosted by SFU SOCA fuses Afro dance styles and Contemporary dance styles. Dancers of all levels are welcomed.
SFU BASKETBALL SPECIAL EVENTS
February 24 | SFU West Gym | 7 p.m.
Cheer on the SFU Red Leafs at the February 17 Women's Basketball game and the February 24 Men's Basketball game. These games celebrate Black History Month at SFU and honour the culture, history and accomplishments of the Black community. SFU Athletics is proud to celebrate alongside Black students, student-athletes, coaches and staff and recognize the valuable contributions by the Black community in the advancement of sports at SFU.
UPDATE: Due to unforseen circumstances, Western Oregon University has forfeited the Women's Basketball game scheduled for February 17.
