Political satire in the French Revolution: an illustrated talk

TIME: 11:30 - 12:30pm
DATE:  Tuesday, January 15, 2019
TITLE: Political satire in the French Revolution: an illustrated talk.
VENUE:  Harbour Centre room 7000
SPEAKER:  Sheila Delany

ABSTRACT:
The talk will center, for its literary content, on the work of Sylvain Maréchal (1750-1803), a prolific writer in several genres; and for its illustrations on often obscene cartoons and illustrations widely circulated during the revolutionary period. The targets are primarily Catholic officials and royalty, particularly the queen, Marie Antoinette. I have translated two of Maréchal's shorter works: his satirical set of saints' lives, and his novella about a cross-dressing young Parisienne obsessed with a handsome young priest. Both will be available for sale by the SFU Bookstore at the talk.
