Guided Tour of Riverview Grounds
Time: 10:00AM–12:00PM
The next SFURA walk will be a guided tour of the wonderful trees on the grounds of Riverview Hospital (Coquitlam). A member of the Riverview Horticultural Society, Mary
Brown, will provide expert guidance for the walk. Participants may either meet at 10 AM and take a 45-minute walk to the start of the tour (option A) or they may join the group and the guide at 11 AM at the Henry Esson Building-Riverview (option B). The tour of the arboretum will take about an hour in a park-like setting. At the end of the tour, we can have a picnic lunch at the tables at Finnie's garden, weather permitting. Jackie Viswanathan will lead the walk. Dress for the weather, and wear comfortable shoes or boots.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS FOR THOSE ARRIVING AT 10 AM (OPTION A)
Driving East on Hway 1, take Exit 44 (Coquitlam City Center, Lougheed 7), not Exit 44B. Stay in the left lane. Turn left to United Blvd North for about 200 m, then right to Mariner Way. We
will meet at 10 AM at the public parking (traffic lights) where Chilko Drive crosses Mariner on the right. The parking is on the left side (West) of Mariner, along Mundy Park.
Or: driving East on Barnet-Lougheed, turn right on Johnson which becomes Mariner. Drive as far as the crossing with Chilko: parking will be on your right.
THE ROUTE WE WILL WALK (about 45 minutes one way):
We will walk south a short distance along Mariner to the entrance to the Riverview Forest, and follow a trail down. We then will take a path to the left that leads to Sylvan Crescent, turn left on Riverview Crescent and enter the Riverview Hospital Grounds through a gate on Chilko Drive. We will walk for about 1.5 km on a dirt road through the woods, then turn left through Finnie's Garden (public washrooms) and arrive at the Henry Esson Building where our guide, Mary, and the rest of the group will meet us (better washrooms
there). The trails are wide, easy and umbrella friendly.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS FOR THOSE ARRIVING AT 11 AM (OPTION B)
Driving East on Hway 1, take Exit 44 (Coquitlam City Center). Drive some distance on Lougheed (no 7). Turn LEFT at the traffic lights at Colony Farm Rd. Take Holly Drive through hospital grounds, turn uphill to Oak Crescent. The Henry Esson Bldg (yellow) is on the
right side on Kalmia Dr. (There is more parking higher up from Kalmia). The guide will meet us at the front door at 11 AM.
Riverview Hospital is also accessible by bus. (Get off at the cottages, opposite the old Credit Union).
