Walk Along the Lynn Headwaters Loop
Time: 10:00AM–12:30PM
The next SFURA walk is on the Lynn Headwaters Loop, in Lynn Headwaters Regional Park in North Vancouver. The walk is Wednesday, March 10 at 10:00 AM, and Bob Horsfall will lead it. Depending on the weather and the number showing up for the walk, we may divide into two groups with one group staying on the lower trail and the other group taking the portion of the loop at higher altitude. If you plan to walk only on the lower trail next to Lynn Creek, runners will be OK. If you plan to take the portion of the loop at higher altitude, lightweight hiking boots are recommended. The entire trail is umbrella-compatible.
Driving directions:
From the Upper Levels Highway, take Exit 19, Lynn Valley Road, and head northeast. (Those who are driving westbound on the Upper Levels Highway can instead take Exit 21, drive north on Mountain Highway, and then turn northeast on Lynn Valley Highway. This option is unavailable for eastbound travellers on the Upper Levels Highway.) Pass the approach to Lynn Canyon Park on your right. Do not turn left on Dempsey Road but continue on Lynn Valley Road into Lynn Headwaters Park. The final part of your approach to the park is somewhat winding and narrow, so use caution as you approach the three parking lots. Drive past the second overflow lot (the southernmost one), and park in the first overflow lot. Regardless of where people park, we will meet in the first overflow parking lot (the northern one) at 10 AM. Another small parking lot at the end of the drivable road is usually full. There are toilet facilities and picnic tables at this parking lot.
The route we will walk:
We will all begin walking upstream along Lynn Creek. About a half hour and 2 km later a short connector trail breaks from the trail along the stream and goes uphill to join the higher altitude Lynn Headwaters Trail. At this creekside junction, depending upon weather conditions and individual preferences, we can either return to the starting point alongside the creek, take the short connector trail uphill, or continue north along the creek.
If we continue along the creek, after another half hour and 2 km the creekside trail meets the Lynn Headwaters Trail. If we decide at some point to divide into two groups, David Ryeburn will lead the higher altitude group and Bob Horsfall will lead those returning on the lower creekside route. The creekside route is rated Easy and should take about 2 hours. If David leads a group on the upper trail, it is rated easy/moderate or moderate (depending on the route they take). If the weather is less than ideal, we will all stay on the lower creekside route.
If you have questions, you can email Bob Horsfall, David Ryeburn, or Ted Cohn.
