Walk Along Portion of Capilano Pacific Trail

March 03, 2010

Time: 10:00AM–12:30PM

The next SFURA walk is on the Capilano Pacific Trail from Keith Road to the Cleveland Dam and return. The walk is on Wednesday, March 3 at 10:00 a.m., and Ted Cohn will lead it. The walk is very scenic.

Most of the trail to the Cleveland Dam rises gradually, but there is an elevation change. It is well laid out on a mainly wide trail, but there are some narrower areas. Hiking boots are recommended, and some people (such as Ted himself) will want to bring a walking stick.

We would rate this walk as moderate.

Driving directions:

From the East:
See Map. Cross the Second Narrows Bridge and take the Upper Levels Highway going west. Get off at the Taylor Way exit, go South on Taylor Way to Keith Road. Go left (east) on Keith Road. Follow the residential streets and park your car at the end of the road a little beyond the underpass of the Upper Levels highway. This is where we will meet at 10:00 a.m.

From the South in Vancouver:
See Map. Cross the Lions Gate Bridge and go left (west) on Marine Drive a short distance to Taylor Way. Turn right (north) on Taylor Way to Keith Road. Go right (east) on Keith Road. Follow the residential streets and park your car a little beyond the underpass of the Upper Levels highway. This is where we will meet at 10:00 a.m.

The route we will walk:
We start upstream on an old railway grade, then leave it for the forest to the trail. We ascend to well above the river, where there are large numbers of majestic trees. We take a detour at Houlgate Creek and then continue on the Capilano Pacific trail up to the Cleveland Dam. At the Dam there is a beautiful view of the falls, the Capilano Reserve, and the north shore mountains. After having a snack at the Dam, we descend by the same route to Keith Road.
