Walk Along Burnaby Foreshore Park and West
Time: 10:00AM–12:30PM
The next SFURA walk begins at Burnaby Foreshore Park on Wednesday, June 30 at 10:00 AM. David Ryeburn will lead the walk.
Driving directions:
Take Marine Way (not Marine Drive) in Vancouver or Burnaby to Byrne Road. Byrne Road crosses Marine Way about 3 km east of Boundary Road and about 3 km west of the Queensborough Bridge. Drive southwest about 1.5 km along Byrne Road to the end, where it bends left 90 degrees and becomes Fraser Park Drive which runs southeast. Immediately after that bend, turn right (southwest) into the parking lot. We will meet in this parking lot at 10 AM. There are washrooms nearby.
The route we will walk:
We will walk generally west about 2 km along the trail nearest the bank of the Fraser River, to the Burnaby-Vancouver boundary. We then will walk about 1.5 km more along a wide but undeveloped path to the foot of Kerr Street in Vancouver, and after that (using fully developed trails) less than 1 km more into Riverfront Park (washrooms). The group may wish to go a bit further to Gladstone Park or further yet as far as just east of the foot of Argyle Street, where the trail presently ends. Note that this point is only about 400 m east of the Knight Street Bridge.
We will return the way we came. A picnic lunch near the parking lot would be pleasant. Some of the picnic tables nearby have roofs in case of rain. After lunch, the walk leader will take those interested east, past an abandoned railway bridge, to the ecological reserve, and on past the Burnaby incinerator, ironically adjacent to the ecological reserve.
The main portion of the walk (before lunch) will take about 2 hours. Running shoes and umbrellas are OK. The postprandial jaunt should take a little over one hour; if wet, light-weight hiking boots would be better for this portion of the walk, sections of which are also not very umbrella-friendly.
